I was seven years old when I first saw the most vivid, most realistic images of all the different species of dinosaurs. I remember sitting on the couch with my older brother who was nine at the time and looking at his face filled with excitement and anticipation. I didn’t understand why he was so thrilled, but when my dad’s hand pushed the tape in the VCR, pressed the play button, and suddenly the music came on. I knew at that moment I was going somewhere and was being pulled into an unusual yet similar world.
This was at a time when Pakistan was building roads outside my house, covering up all the sand. This was a time when big changes and new ideas were introduced. Western films were becoming very popular and as my brother and I sat on the couch with our eyes glued to the television, we heard the roars of dinosaurs, the screams of two young children, the wits of one very brave woman, the strength of two courageous men and a unimaginable plan from a scientist who created a park roaming with dinosaurs by planting extract of dinosaur DNA found in an insect.
The movie Jurassic park was the first American film I had watched at seven years old. I remember this one scene that still surprises me to this day. It takes place in a kitchen where the young boy and girl are being chased by two dinosaurs. Somehow the young boy manages to find a place to hide but the girl is seen by one of the dinosaurs. As she jumps inside a small cupboard and struggles to pull down the cover, the dinosaur runs towards the cupboard and suddenly smashes into it. It is than the audience realizes that the dinosaur was running towards the girls’ reflection, while the girl was on the opposite side fighting to pull the cover down.
